Hydro Jet Drain Cleaning: What Is It & How Does It Work?

Hydrojetting Drains

Updated On 04/14/2026

Hydro jet drain cleaning can be beneficial to those who want to clear out debris from drainage pipes. However, it’s important to recruit a professional with the knowledge to ensure cleaning is successful. In some cases, hydro jet cleaning may not be right for your property. However, if your pipes can handle the pressure, this can be a great way to clear blockages and clean pipes. Arrow Sewer & Drain provides expert sewer and drain services throughout northern and central New Jersey. Here, we discuss what hydro jetting sewer lines is and how it works.

What Is Hydro Jet Cleaning?

Hydro jet cleaning involves using a long, hose-like device to clean deep into sewer lines. It can clear out blockages present in the sewer line, as well as buildup on the walls of the sewer line. Hydro jet cleaning can play a large role in expanding the life of your sewer line. Because of its intense cleaning power, you can ensure your drains remain clear for longer and prevent cracks or other damage associated with clogged water pipes.

Hydro jet cleaning is a great option for newer, more durable drain systems. This is because they can withstand the intense water pressure from the hydro jet. Older piping may not be able to handle the pressure, which can result in damage.

How Does Hydro Jet Cleaning Work?

A hydro jet tool is designed with a long, flexible hose pipe that attaches to a machine to pressurize the water. Technicians place the tool deep into the sewer line and the high-pressure stream works to move debris down the sewer line and into the larger, shared sewer pipe. This is different from snaking a sewer line, as a snaking tool has blades at the end of the hose to clear debris instead of water.

When receiving a hydro jet cleaning, services typically begin with a professional sewer scope inspection, or a CCTV sewer inspection of your sewer system to assess the problem. They use a sewer scope’s camera inspection to check where the clog is located, as well as to find existing cracks and other damages. Not only does this determine the best spot to snake the hydro jet into the drain pipe, but it also indicates whether your pipes can handle a high-pressurized cleaning from the hydro jet.

Using water pressures up to 35,000 PSI, your technician will adjust the pressure depending on your sewage system. Water then moves through your sewage system to safely flush out debris. Hydro jet cleaning can clear drains from substances, including:

  • Tree roots
  • Grease
  • Food particles
  • Mineral scale
  • Hair clogging
  • Silt/sand

When to Consider a Hydro Jet Cleaning

If you experience frequent or consistent plumbing backups, smelly bathroom or kitchen sink drains, noisy pipes, or slow-running drains, you may benefit from a hydro jet drain cleaning. This can also be a great method to use if other solutions, such as chemical cleaning, did not work.

Hydro jet  drain cleaning can not only eliminate debris or soap buildup in pipes, but it can also be used for general maintenance cleaning, getting rid of residual debris, or removing harmful, odor-causing bacteria.

While hydro jet cleaning may seem simple enough to do yourself, it’s better to recruit a professional. Because of the high water pressure, incorrect use can result in significantly damaged pipes. Hiring a professional can avoid detrimental issues and costly repairs, and it can ensure your pipes remain clear without the added stress of DIY attempts.
