If you have researched sewer repairs, you may have heard the term “trenchless sewer.” This term may sound like a contradiction, as sewers are laid underground. Recent innovation, however, has led to new methods for sewer repair that require no excavation. Here, Arrow Sewer & Drain explains what these are, how they work, and how you can benefit.
What Is Trenchless Sewer Repair?
Trenchless sewer repair refers to several modern repair methods. Rather than excavating to access a damaged pipe, these methods use robotic equipment to inspect and repair pipes from the inside. Trenchless repairs require almost no digging, helping to preserve your yard and landscaping. They are also significantly faster than traditional methods, typically being completed in one to two days, depending on the project’s scale. This helps you return to your normal home life or business operations sooner.
What Is CIPP Lining?
Cured-in-place pipe lining, also called CIPP lining, is used to repair broken sewer pipes without excavating. It works by placing a sturdy pipe lining that reinforces existing pipes, eliminating leaks and preventing further damage. The process works as follows:
- Using an existing opening in the pipe system, the technician inserts a CCTV robotic camera.
- The technician uses the camera to examine the pipe interior and locate damaged sections.
- A robotic puller inserts a resin-infused textile pipe liner and pulls it into place.
- Air inflation is used to press the liner to the walls, ensuring a smooth circumference.
- A hardening agent is applied to the liner, fully curing the resin within a few hours.
- The cured liner creates a durable reinforcement to strengthen old pipes and eliminate leaks.
The entire repair takes only a few hours to complete. It restores pipes to like-new condition with full capacity. Results from CIPP lining last up to 50 years before further repair or replacement is needed.
When Is CIPP Lining Recommended?
CIPP lining trenchless sewer repair is most suitable for pipes that are damaged, but still largely intact. Arrow Sewer & Drain recommends it for applications such as:
- Aged or corroded pipe material
- Cracks and dents
- Joint offsets
- Leaks
- Other mild to moderate damage
CIPP lining also provides limescale prevention Over time, lime and other minerals accumulate on the interior of your pipe, reducing its flow capacity. CIPP lining involves removing this scale. The cured liner discourages mineral crystallization, preventing future buildup.
What Is Pipe Bursting?
If your pipe is completely nonfunctional, however, mere repair may be insufficient. In this case, Arrow Sewer & Drain recommends pipe bursting. This is a trenchless method for pipe replacement. Its process follows these steps:
- The technician inserts a CCTV robotic camera into the pipe system.
- Using the camera, the technician inspects the pipe interior to determine the extent of damage.
- A robotic puller progresses through the pipe, using compressed air, hydraulics, or a cone-shaped head to break the old pipe and push it outwards.
- The robot pulls segments of new pipe behind it, placing them where the old pipe used to be.
As with other trenchless methods, pipe bursting is comparatively quick – most projects take only one or two days to complete. The result is a totally new pipe system that follows the existing line. Pipe bursting creates no fumes or chemicals, and is completely safe for your yard, landscaping, and foundation.
When Is Pipe Bursting Recommended?
Pipe bursting is best for pipes that are severely damaged. It works on nearly all materials, including clay, concrete, plastic, copper, fiberglass, and cast iron. It can also replace pipes of most lengths or sizes. Arrow Sewer & Drain uses it to repair:
- Aging or corroded pipe material
- Severe cracks
- Backup or backflow
- Major leakage and draining
Bursting equipment needs space to navigate. If the old pipe has completely collapsed, then excavation may be necessary. In addition, pipe bursting can only follow existing pipelines. If you wish to lay a new line or change the path of your existing one, then excavation is required to put the new ones in place.
