Most homeowners first hear the word “belly” while watching a camera inspection of their own sewer line. The camera dips, the water rises over the lens, and the technician says some version of: there’s your problem — you’ve got a belly. Sometimes that’s followed by a recommendation to replace the whole line.
Slow down. A belly is one of the most common findings on any sewer camera inspection, and it exists on a spectrum. Some bellies do need repair. Many are shallow, stable, and manageable for years. And the repair being proposed matters just as much as the diagnosis, because two of the most popular trenchless methods — lining and pipe bursting — cannot fix a belly at all. Plenty of homeowners have paid for a trenchless repair and kept the belly.

What a Belly in a Sewer Line Is
Your sewer lateral works by gravity. To carry solids along with water, the pipe needs a continuous downhill slope from your house to the municipal main — the standard for typical residential pipe is about a quarter inch of fall per foot of run. No pump, no pressure; just grade.
A belly (also called a sag, a low spot, or a bellied line) is a section where the pipe has settled below that grade line. The pipe itself is intact — nothing is broken — but the dip holds standing water the way a valley holds a puddle. Every flush sends solids through that pool, and the flow slows exactly where it needs momentum. Some solids drop out and stay. Over time the low spot accumulates sludge, grease, and debris, and becomes the spot where clogs happen again.
That’s the defining feature of a belly: it’s a slope failure in a structurally sound pipe. Keep that in mind, because it’s the key to everything about how — and whether — to fix one.
Belly vs. Channeling vs. Collapse: Three Problems That Look Alike
Standing water on a camera is a symptom with three different causes, and they call for three different responses.
A belly is the pipe sitting low. The pipe wall is intact all the way around; the water pools because of geometry. Fix the geometry and the problem is gone.
Channeling is the opposite discovery: the grade may be fine, but the bottom of the pipe has eroded away — common in old cast iron where decades of flow wear a groove, then an open channel, into the pipe floor. Water in a channeled section sits in the eroded trough. Channeling is structural damage, and unlike a belly it can be a genuine candidate for lining, because the upper pipe still provides a host for the liner.

From inside the house, all three produce similar symptoms. On camera, they’re distinguishable — but only by someone reading the footage carefully rather than reacting to the first pool of water. A camera that dips below water tells you where the problem is, not yet what it is. The pipe material, the shape of the water line, and what the lens shows at the bottom of the dip make the call.
Symptoms of a Sewer Line Belly
A belly announces itself through repetition. One clog is bad luck. The same clog, in the same place, on a schedule — that’s geometry.
- Recurring blockages that cabling keeps “fixing.” A cable or hydro jetting clears the accumulated debris out of the low spot, flow returns to normal, and then the belly spends the next weeks or months refilling. If your drain problems have a rhythm to them, suspect a low spot.
- Slow drains throughout the house that come and go. A belly restricts the main line intermittently — worse after heavy use, better after the pool flushes through. Fixture-by-fixture problems point elsewhere; whole-house problems that fluctuate point to the lateral.

How a Camera Confirms a Belly — and How Severity Is Judged

- How deep the water is. A lens that skims through a shallow film is a different finding than a lens fully submerged for several feet of travel. Depth of standing water is a direct proxy for how far the pipe has dropped below grade.
- How long the bellied section runs. A short dip of a foot or two traps little and often self-scours. A long sag holding water across ten or more feet collects everything and scours nothing.

Does a sewer line belly need to be replaced?
Not always — and you should be skeptical of anyone who says otherwise before measuring it. Why NJ Sewer Lines Develop Bellies
A pipe doesn’t sink on its own. The soil underneath it moves, and the pipe follows.
The most common cause is bedding failure. A lateral is only as straight as the material it rests on. Lines laid decades ago were often bedded on whatever soil was in the trench — and when that soil compacts unevenly, washes out through a leaking joint, or settles after nearby excavation, the unsupported pipe sags into the gap. In jointed clay lines, the same movement takes a different shape: instead of a smooth sag, segments shift out of alignment at the joints — an offset sewer line, which is its own finding with its own repair logic. One material note: Orangeburg pipe deserves special mention here, because a “belly” reading in an Orangeburg line often isn’t settlement at all — it’s the pipe itself deforming and flattening. That’s not a slope problem; it’s the early stage of a structural failure, and it changes the repair conversation completely.
Why Lining and Pipe Bursting Can’t Fix a Belly
This is the most important section of this guide, and it’s the one the industry is quietest about. Search results for sewer bellies prominently feature companies offering to fix them with trenchless lining. Here’s the problem with that, stated plainly.
A liner follows its host. Cured-in-place pipe lining builds a new pipe inside the old one, conforming to the old pipe’s shape — including its sags. Line a bellied pipe and you get a smoother, slightly narrower bellied pipe. The standing water remains, because the geometry that causes it remains. A bursting head follows the route. Pipe bursting replaces the old pipe by pulling a new one along the old pipe’s exact path. If that path dips, the new pipe dips. You end up with brand-new pipe and the same old belly. Bursting is the right call for many failing lines — including deformed Orangeburg and partially collapsed pipe with a followable route — precisely because it follows the existing path. For a belly, that defining strength becomes the disqualifier.

What Does Fix a Belly
Spot repair: excavate, re-bed, re-lay
The standard correction for a confirmed belly is targeted excavation of the sagging section. The pipe is exposed, the failed bedding is removed, a proper compacted stone base is placed, and new pipe is laid at correct grade and tied into the sound pipe on either side. Because the camera’s locator marks the belly’s position and depth from the surface, the dig touches only the affected run — this is a surgical repair, not a trench across the yard. A new line at grade: horizontal directional drilling
When a line has multiple bellies, or a long sag across most of its run, correcting spot after spot stops making sense — the bedding is failing everywhere. The better answer is a new lateral installed on a new path at controlled grade, which is what horizontal directional drilling does. HDD bores the route independently of the old pipe, so the new line’s slope is set by the bore plan, not inherited from a failing trench. What Drives the Cost of a Belly Repair
We don’t publish dollar figures, because any single number would be a range so wide it misleads in both directions. Usually this is an uphill claim, and it’s worth understanding why before you call your carrier. Standard homeowners policies cover sudden, accidental damage — a belly is almost by definition gradual settlement, and most policies exclude earth movement, settling, and wear. That said, three avenues are worth checking.
