What Is Horizontal Directional Drilling?

Horizontal directional drilling is a form of trenchless sewer repair that creates an entirely new path for your sewer line. A steerable drill head bores a pilot hole beneath your yard from an entry pit to an exit pit, the bore is widened by back-reaming, and the new pipe is pulled into place along it — continuous, correctly graded, and independent of whatever failed above it.

That independence is what sets HDD apart from every other trenchless method. Lining rebuilds a pipe’s wall and bursting follows a pipe’s path — both need the old line in some usable form. What HDD Fixes — and What It Can’t

Sewer lines fail in predictable ways, and most failures leave something behind — a wall to rebuild, a path to follow. HDD is the method for failures that leave nothing: when the route itself is gone, the fix is a new one.

HDD is the right method for:

  • Fully collapsed lines. A collapsed sewer line offers no passage for a camera, a liner, or a bursting cable — a new bore path is the trenchless answer.
  • Pipe crushed by settlement or loads. When soil movement or surface weight has flattened a section beyond passage, the route fails the followable test.
  • Orangeburg deformed past cable passage. Softened Orangeburg pipe that has ovaled shut can’t guide a bursting head through — the same followable-route test, failed by deformation.
  • Bellies that need a new grade. A sag in the line can’t be fixed by any method that follows the old pipe — but a new bore path is drilled at the correct slope from the start.
  • Severed or separated lines. When sections have pulled fully apart, there’s no continuous route left to repair.

HDD is not the method for:

  • Pipe with an intact route and a repairable wall. Structural cracks in a passable line call for trenchless pipe lining — a rebuilt wall inside the pipe you have.
  • Degraded pipe the cable can still follow. If a route remains, pipe bursting replaces the line along its existing path — a smaller job than boring a new one.
  • Surface corrosion and scale. A structurally sound wall that’s corroding needs epoxy pipe lining, not a new pipe.

  • Full structural collapse — the pipe wall gives way entirely, closing the line to camera, liner, and cable alike
