The distinction matters because the fixes live in different trades: sewage points at drain and sewer work; clean storm-timed water may point at grading, gutters, or a sump system. A Note on Ejector Pits and Basement Bathrooms
One more system lives in many finished New Jersey basements, and it muddies this diagnosis when nobody accounts for it: the sewage ejector pit. Fixtures below the level of the main sewer line — a basement bathroom, a laundry sink — can’t drain by gravity, so they drain into a sealed pit whose pump lifts wastewater up into the main line. When the pump fails, sticks, or loses power, the pit fills and the lowest connected drain backs up — producing a scene identical to a main line blockage in a home whose main line is perfectly clear.
