You caught a whiff of rotten eggs near a drain, or the whole basement smells like a sewer, and now you’re wondering whether your family is breathing something harmful. The short answer: at the concentrations found in most homes, sewer gas is an irritant and a warning sign, not an immediate emergency. But it is never normal. Sewer gas inside your living space means something in your plumbing or sewer system has failed, and a few of those failures get costlier the longer they wait.

Most of those failures turn out to be simple, inexpensive fixes. A few deserve prompt attention. This guide is meant to help you tell the difference calmly: what sewer gas is, what exposure does to you, the small number of situations that call for real urgency, and — the part most articles skip — where it’s leaking from in a New Jersey home and how to get that found and fixed.

What Is Sewer Gas?

Sewer gas is the mixture of gases produced when wastewater and organic waste decompose inside pipes, traps, and sewer lines. It’s not one gas but a blend, and the blend is why it behaves the way it does:

  • Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) — the rotten-egg smell. Toxic at high concentrations, an irritant at low ones. This is the component your nose is detecting.
  • Methane — odorless, flammable, and capable of displacing oxygen in enclosed spaces. You cannot smell methane; you smell the hydrogen sulfide traveling with it.
  • Ammonia — sharp and irritating to eyes, nose, and throat.
  • Carbon dioxide and trace gases — largely harmless at household levels, but part of the oxygen-displacement picture in confined spaces.

In a healthy plumbing system, none of this enters your home. Sewer gas is supposed to travel up your vent stack and exit above the roofline, while water-filled traps at every fixture seal the pipe openings inside the house. When you smell sewer gas indoors, one of those two defenses — the venting or the trap seals — has been breached, or the pipe itself is compromised.

What Does Sewer Gas Smell Like?

Rotten eggs is the classic description, courtesy of hydrogen sulfide. Depending on the source, it can also read as sulfur, decay, or a general “sewage” odor that’s hard to place.

Two things about the smell matter for your safety:

Your nose stops detecting it. Hydrogen sulfide causes olfactory fatigue — after a short period of continuous exposure, you stop smelling it even though it’s still there. At high concentrations, H2S deadens your sense of smell almost immediately. This is why “it smelled bad earlier but I got used to it” is not reassurance. It may mean the opposite.

Sewer gas is not natural gas. Natural gas is odorized with mercaptan, which also has a sulfurous, rotten-egg character, and the two are easy to confuse. If there is any chance what you’re smelling is natural gas — the smell is near a gas appliance, a gas line, or your meter — leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. Treat it as a gas emergency until proven otherwise. If the smell clearly comes from drains, fixtures, or the basement floor, you’re most likely dealing with sewer gas, and the rest of this guide applies.

Is Sewer Gas Dangerous? What Exposure Does to You

Context matters here. The research on serious hydrogen sulfide injuries comes almost entirely from industrial and confined-space settings — sewer workers, manure pits, refineries — where concentrations reach hundreds of parts per million. A home with a dried-out trap or a cracked pipe is a different exposure profile: much lower concentration, but potentially continuous, in the place where you sleep and breathe every day.

At typical household concentrations, sewer gas exposure produces irritation and flu-like symptoms rather than acute poisoning, and those symptoms resolve once the source is fixed. The practical problem isn’t severity — it’s recognition: people live with mild symptoms for months without connecting them to the faint smell in the basement.

Symptoms of Sewer Gas Exposure

Common symptoms of low-level, ongoing exposure include:

  • Headaches that improve when you leave the house
  • Nausea or loss of appetite
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Fatigue and poor concentration
  • Eye, nose, and throat irritation
  • Worsening of asthma or other respiratory conditions

None of these is unique to sewer gas, which is exactly why it goes undiagnosed. The tell is the pattern: symptoms that cluster in one part of the house, affect multiple household members, or ease when you’re away for a few days. Long-Term, Low-Level Exposure

Long-term exposure to household-level sewer gas hasn’t been shown to cause the permanent neurological damage seen in industrial H2S incidents, but living with a continuous leak means living with continuous irritant exposure — and with whatever is causing the leak, which in our experience is rarely a problem that stays the same size. A dried trap stays a dried trap. A cracked lateral leaking gas into the soil against your foundation does not.

Can Sewer Gas Kill You in Your Sleep?

This is one of the most-searched sewer gas questions, so here is a straight answer: at the concentrations produced by residential plumbing failures, sewer gas is very unlikely to kill you, asleep or awake. Deaths from sewer gas happen in confined spaces — tanks, pits, manholes — where hydrogen sulfide and methane can accumulate to levels no house with normal air exchange will reach.

That said, three scenarios are worth handling with extra care:

  1. Sleeping in a basement with an active source. A basement bedroom near a failed floor drain trap, an open cleanout, or a sewage backup concentrates exposure in the room with the least ventilation. The likely result is morning headaches and nausea, not an emergency — but it’s the one residential setup that can produce meaningful overnight exposure, and the easiest one to fix by addressing the source.
  2. Olfactory fatigue. You fall asleep smelling it faintly; your nose stops reporting it; the source keeps leaking all night. You can’t rely on waking up because it “got worse.”
  3. A strong, sudden smell. A powerful sewer odor that appears abruptly often accompanies a sewer backup in progress or a significant venting failure. That’s a leave-the-room, open-the-windows, make-a-call situation — covered below.

One more thing worth knowing: carbon monoxide detectors do not detect sewer gas. A silent CO detector tells you nothing about hydrogen sulfide or methane.

Sewer Gas Poisoning: What to Do If the Smell Is Strong

True sewer gas poisoning is rare in homes — it belongs to confined industrial spaces, not basements with a failed trap. But a strong smell still deserves a sensible response. These steps are precautions that cost you nothing, in order:

  1. Get fresh air moving. Open windows and doors in the affected area. Sewer gas problems are concentration problems — dilution buys you safety immediately.
  2. Keep flames away while it airs out. No candles, no lighters, no smoking near the smell — a simple precaution while the concentration is unknown.
  3. Step out of the affected space until it airs out, especially bedrooms and basements. If the smell might be natural gas, leave the house entirely and call the gas utility from outside.
  4. Call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) if anyone has significant symptoms — dizziness, vomiting, confusion — and check in with a doctor. In practice this is rarely needed for household exposure, but it’s a free call and the right one to make when symptoms are real.
  5. Restore trap seals if the cause is obvious. Pour a quart of water into any drain that hasn’t been used in weeks — guest bathrooms, basement floor drains, laundry sinks. If the smell fades and stays gone, a dried trap was your culprit. If it returns, the source is deeper in the system.

Is Sewer Gas Flammable or Explosive?

Technically yes — the methane in sewer gas is flammable, and hydrogen sulfide is too — but context keeps this in perspective. Open living spaces essentially never reach flammable concentrations. The scenario worth respecting is the enclosed pocket: a sealed basement corner, a wall cavity where a vent pipe has separated, a crawlspace over a broken line.

The practical rule is simple: a faint intermittent odor is a maintenance item; a strong persistent one in an enclosed space means air it out first and keep flames away until the source is found. That’s a precaution, not a prediction — house fires from sewer gas are genuinely rare.

Where Sewer Gas Comes From in a NJ Home

Everything above is first aid. This section is the fix — because sewer gas in the house always has a physical cause, and in New Jersey homes the causes follow patterns we see every week.

Dried-Out or Failed Traps

The most common and cheapest fix. Every fixture has a U-shaped trap holding water that blocks gas. Traps in unused fixtures evaporate dry — guest bathrooms, basement showers, and above all basement floor drains, which nobody thinks about until the basement smells. Pour water in monthly and the seal is restored. If a floor drain smells and gurgles even when it’s kept wet, the problem is downstream of the trap — often a line issue backing gas (and eventually water) toward the lowest opening in the house. A basement drain that’s backing up and a basement that smells like sewage are usually the same story at different stages.

The House Trap — the Pre-1972 New Jersey Special

If your home was built before about 1972, there’s a good chance it has a house trap — a large U-shaped trap on the main line, usually near the foundation wall, that was standard practice in New Jersey for decades. House traps are a double-edged sword for sewer gas. Working correctly, they block gas from the municipal main. But an old house trap with a cracked body, a missing cleanout plug, or a dried seal becomes a direct gas leak at the exact point where your main line enters the house. A Blocked or Failed Vent Stack

Your vent stack is the system’s chimney — it carries sewer gas up and out above the roof while letting air in so drains flow. When it’s blocked by a bird’s nest, leaves, ice, or years of debris, gas takes the path of least resistance: back through the weakest trap seal in the house. A Cracked or Broken Sewer Pipe

This is the source that deserves the most respect. A cracked or broken sewer pipe — under the slab, in a crawlspace, or inside a wall — leaks gas continuously, and unlike a dried trap, it never resets itself. Sewer smell with no obvious fixture source, smell concentrated along one wall or one section of floor, or smell paired with damp spots, lush patches in the yard, or pest activity all point toward the pipe itself. A cracked line under or beside the house also means everything the gas is escaping from — wastewater — is escaping into your soil or slab too.

Bellies, Offsets, and Collapses: When the Line Itself Is Failing

Three structural failures produce chronic sewer gas as a side effect:

  • A belly in the sewer line holds standing waste in a sag in the pipe. That trapped waste decomposes continuously — your lateral becomes a gas generator a few feet from the foundation, and every venting hiccup pushes the product toward the house.
  • An offset sewer line has separated at a joint, opening a gap that leaks gas (and wastewater) into the surrounding soil, where it can migrate along the pipe path to the foundation.
  • A collapsed sewer line blocks flow outright — waste and gas that can’t exit toward the street back up toward the house. A strong sewer smell alongside multiple slow drains is one of the classic warnings that a line is losing structure.

These failures rarely announce themselves politely, and they share the same underlying drivers — New Jersey’s clay-heavy soils, freeze-thaw cycles, traffic vibration, and pre-1970s pipe materials. A Backup in Progress

Sometimes the smell is the opening act. Sewage that can’t move toward the street builds gas pressure ahead of it, so a sudden strong sewer smell — especially with gurgling toilets or a wet floor drain — can be minutes-to-hours ahead of visible sewage. A Missing or Loose Cleanout Cap

The simplest source on this list: your sewer cleanout is a capped access point on your main line, and a cracked, loose, or missing cap is an open window for sewer gas — indoors if the cleanout is in your basement, or around the foundation if it’s outside. Thirty seconds to check, and one of the first things worth ruling out.

How Professionals Find a Sewer Gas Leak

Guessing is expensive with sewer gas, because the smell travels — where you smell it and where it’s entering are often two different rooms. A proper diagnosis uses:

  • Gas detection meters to measure concentrations room by room and narrow down the entry point.
  • Smoke testing — non-toxic smoke pushed through the system escapes exactly where gas does: failed seals, open joints, cracked vents inside walls. It turns an invisible leak into a visible one.
  • Camera inspection for the underground half of the equation. If the source is a cracked, bellied, offset, or collapsed line, the only way to know — rather than guess — is to put a camera in the pipe and look. That combination matters because the fix ranges from a quart of water in a floor drain to a structural line repair. You want the diagnosis before anyone quotes you the fix.

Are Sewer Gas Detectors Worth Buying?

Consumer sewer gas detectors — typically hydrogen sulfide or multi-gas alarms — are inexpensive and reasonable as an early-warning layer, with two caveats. First, most household exposure happens at concentrations below the alarm thresholds of cheap units, so a silent detector doesn’t mean clean air. Second, a detector tells you gas is present, not where it’s coming from — it doesn’t replace diagnosis. If you have a basement bedroom, a sump/utility area you rarely visit, or a history of sewer problems, a detector is a sensible supplement. Is sewer gas from the toilet dangerous?

Occasional whiffs when flushing usually mean a failing wax ring or a venting problem pulling the bowl’s trap seal — an irritant and a fix-it-soon issue rather than an emergency. A constant sewer smell from one toilet means gas has a steady path into the room and is worth diagnosing promptly.

Does sewer gas rise or fall?

Both — it’s a mixture. Methane is lighter than air and rises; hydrogen sulfide is heavier and settles low, which is why basements and floor-level drains hold the smell. Ventilating means moving air at both levels, not just opening one high window.

Can sewer gas explode?

At the concentrations in an open living space, ignition is unlikely. In enclosed pockets — wall cavities, sealed basement corners, crawlspaces over a broken line — flammable concentrations are possible. Strong smell in an enclosed space = ventilate first, no flames.
